Edinburgh League:
Organised by the University of Edinburgh Polo Club, the league
traditionally pits five Edinburgh teams and one team from St Andrews against
each other in matches held at the Edinburgh Polo Club's facilities on the
Dalmahoy Estate. This is an intermediate level competition and offers extremely
exciting matches to watch and support. St Andrews performs very strongly each
year, and is proud to have won the league in both 2007 and 2010.
Scotland League:
Created in 2008 by a St Andrews alumna,
the Scotland League provides an opportunity for beginner level players
to spread their wings and experience proper competition, often for the
first time. The league has grown to include teams from St Andrews,
Stirling, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, and Edinburgh OTC,
who each play four fixtures over the course of the academic year.
The league is hosted by club instructor, Thom Bell, at the Kinross Polo Club.
St Andrews Opening Tournament:
Launched by the St Andrews club in 2011, this tournament brings all of the polo playing
universities in Scotland together to enjoy a season-opening tournament at the Howe Country
Centre, located just 20 minutes outside of St Andrews. Held over two days, chukkas are
played at each the beginner, novice and intermediate levels.
B.E.D.S:
Named for the four universities who originally played in
the tournament (Bristol, Edinburgh, Durham and St Andrews), B.E.D.S
is organised by the Edinburgh club in late October or early November of
each year. It has recently grown to involve teams from Irish, Scottish and
English universities alike and is usually held at the Dalmahoy Estate.
SUPA Arena Nationals:
Organised by the Schools and Universities
Polo Association (SUPA), the Arena Nationals (informally known as Winter Nationals)
are held early in February of each year at the Hand Equestrian Centre
in Clevedon. With chukkas spread over four days between well over 100 teams
from more than 50 universities around the country, this tournament has broken world
records for its size. It is both a fun and challenging event with six different
divisions of play.
St Andrews Charity Polo Tournament:
Held each year in the first weekend of May at the
beautiful Strathtyrum Estate (hence the nickname, 'Strathtyrum'), the Charity
Polo Tournament provides an opportunity for members to show off their
skills developed over the course of the winter to their friends and family.
Our first tournament of the season played on grass, Strathtyrum offers
inter-club matches at the beginner and novice level, and a thrilling Varsity
Match which pits St Andrews against Edinburgh. The tournament is held in support
of Help for Heroes. For more information.
SUPA National Universities Tournament
Even larger than its winter counterpart, Summer Nationals is another SUPA enterprise held in early June at the Offchurchbury Polo Club near Royal Leamington Spa. Spread over three days, it is an amazing chance to unwind after exams and finish off the university season with some fast and exciting outdoor polo.
This tournament is especially anticipated by our members thanks to the fantastic social aspect to the event as players from all of the universities camp together onsite and enjoy and excellent players' party on the Saturday night.
